This Thanksgiving, Conventional birds are packed tight indoors in cages. Because of their close quarters, they are routinely fed antibiotics to ward off infection. They dine on GMO soy and corn which was sprayed with pesticides. Their environment is filled with the strong stench of their output and they live very stressed lives. That converts into what we eat to nourish our bodies; it’s no wonder there are so many family feuds during the holidays! Remember, you are what we eat! Organic turkeys are free roaming with room to move and because of that, they taste better. They must have access to fresh air, sunlight, and a clean safe area outdoors. They dine on pesticide-, chemical-, and GMO-free feed as well as bugs outside. They are healthy and therefore are never administered antibiotics.
*Please note that the farms do their best to supply us the exact sizes that we order but they may send us a little larger or smaller birds depending upon availability. We therefore cannot guarantee the size of your bird but we will do our best to get you exactly what you request for your holiday table. Prepay for the size you want and we’ll refund you if smaller or charge you the difference if a little bigger. You will only pay for the exact weight of the turkey you receive. Pick up your fresh bird at your pick up location for your Organic Buying Club box. We suggesting keeping it in your bottom refrigerator drawer where it is cold. Fresh turkeys will hold for a week at 32 degrees F. If you are unsure, we suggest you add a bag of ice under and on top of the turkey in the bottom drawer to keep nice and cold until T-day. We’ll include cooking times and our tested roasting tips! |

How long to cook my bird? You don't have to wake up at the crack of dawn to get your bird ready on Thanksgiving. Lucky enough to be hosting a large gathering? Get two smaller birds instead of one large one, then everyone has more of what they want, more legs, more wings, and it cuts your cooking time almost by half! To cook a turkey at 350 degrees Farenheit:
Take your bird out of the refrigerator to bring it to room temperature about 20 minutes before cooking. Cooking times are approximate and a thermometer is the best way to know for certain that your bird is done. Breast meat should reach 170 -175 degrees F while the thigh should be 180 - 185 degrees F. If stuffing is put in the bird, stuffing should reach 180 degrees F. Put probe in at the beginning and set it for 10 degrees less than considered done, depending upon where you put it. Remember that residual heat will continue to “cook” the bird once you remove it from the oven so taking it out as you approach the done temperature (165 F for the breast near the wing joint) will usually create a moist yet fully cooked bird. Some shake the leg to test doneness; others fork it or cut it to see juices running clear. Don’t cut in too many places and don’t insert an instant-read thermometer too much because you don’t want the juices to escape, you want them in your bird. Always allow to rest 20-30 minutes before carving to allow the juices to settle back into the bird. If you get a frozen bird, put it in your refrigerator (on a tray as it will melt!) on Monday or Tuesday (2-3 days) before you want to prepare it, depending upon the size of the bird. If you need to quickly defrost it, it is perfectly safe to put the still wrapped bird in a sink full of cold water, breast side down, with a continuous thin stream of cold water for 5 to 6 hours. Drain and add more water every half hour to maintain a cold temperature. |
